Meet the Characters of 2021s Mortal Kombat

The trailer for the newest rendition of Mortal Kombat just came out, and it looks like it has everything MK fans could possibly hope for - endless gore, ridiculous fighting styles, and characters that rightly look straight out of your wildest dreams and scariest nightmares.

First released in October of 1992, Mortal Kombat was a 1 Vs. 1 fighting game, where players selected a champ and tried to make their way through a tournament made up of the most powerful heroes and villains in the world.

The characters were instantly iconic, and many of them appear to feature heavily in the new film. Let’s take a look at a few of them:

Cole Young

A completely new character made for the movie (unless he is a classic character who is yet to change his name, which is definitely possible), Cole Young looks to be the protagonist of the film.

A low-end MMA fighter, Cole discovers the heritage that surrounds his mysterious birthmark that is in the shape of the Mortal Kombat dragon.

Sonya Blade

An American soldier who investigates threats to “Earthrealm”, Blade runs the Outer World Investigation Agency. She is a human with no superhuman powers.

In the trailer, she says that she and Jax, another soldier - albeit one with gigantic metal arms - first discovered Mortal Kombat 7 years before while on a mission in Brazil.

Liu Kang

Another good guy and one of the protagonists in the Mortal Kombat video games, Liu Kang is a Shaolin monk and master of kung fu. He is trained by the thunder god Raiden, who is sure to also make an appearance.

Kang has the unique ability to create and control fire, which when combined with his mastery of hand-to-hand combat makes him a deadly opponent.

Shang Tsung

One of the main villains in Mortal Kombat, Shang Tsung is a sorcerer and emperor of “Outworld” who commonly spends his afternoons consuming his enemies’ souls.

In the synopsis of the new film, Tsung sends Sub-Zero to hunt down Cole Young, although why he does this is not yet known.

Sub-Zero

A deadly assassin who works for the evil emperor Shang Tsung, Sub-Zero is arguably the most well-known character in the Mortal Kombat universe.

A cryomancer, Sub-Zero has the ability to create and control ice and cold. In the trailer, he is seen flash-freezing Jax’s (then) human arms so quickly and powerfully that they burst into tiny chunks of frozen flesh.

While these 5 characters were all seen in the trailer, other Mortal Kombat mainstays like Kano, Scorpion, Goro, Mileena, and Jax all promise to play roles in the film.

Catch it in theaters or on HBO Max on April 16, 2021.
